Firefox kept getting fatter and fatter. It was taking me 2-3 minutes to start and 2-3 minutes to shut down. Way too often I was finding Firefox taking over my whole machine. It wasn’t uncommon to see 70% CPU and over a gig of memory consumed.

Then I tried Chrome. Chrome is what Firefox used to be - lean and fast. It’s still a bit flakey on the Mac, but at least if I have to bounce it, it shuts down and starts up very quickly. Performance seems much better than Firefox in general, and its one process per tab model keeps me from having to kill the whole browser for one rogue site.

It seems that Firefox is irrevocably broken. Every release is supposed to fix the speed and memory problems - but they seem to just get worse.

I predict within a couple years Chrome will replace Firefox as the dominant non-IE browser on the web. Hopefully it will help continue the steady decline of IE to irrelevance.

Photo
